Do I Need to Take a Interships While in Masters School

Master's programme in Governance of Science, Technology and Innovations is among HSE's numerous English-taught programmes that are open to international students who can enrol full-time or take a semester or two as part of a study-abroad experience. HSE News Service has talked to some of the programme's students about their decision to apply to HSE and their studies.

Jing Cao, 1st year student from China

I am a global citizen who loves travelling and adventure. I studied at Moscow State University as an exchange student during my junior year because I did a Bachelor's in Russian at the Faculty of Slavic Languages. In the beginning, I felt very lonely because my spoken Russian was not so good and I didn't know how to fit in the local life. Luckily, I made some kind friends and participated in various organizations or social events. I am so happy that I finally connected with Russia and I love Moscow life so much! I not only started to learn one of the hardest languages in the world but also began to understand this great country's culture.

I had a lot of friends from HSE during my first stay in Moscow – we used to go to some conferences or events together and they were always telling me that their school is very international and cool. Then when I started to choose a master's programme, I took HSE into account and put it as my priority. On the one hand, I didn't want to give up my Russian as I still want to practice more, on the other hand, considering my future career plans, English-taught programme felt more practical and useful.

I really like that we go in diverse directions in our lectures or seminars. All classes or discussions with my group mates inspire me a lot and always open my mind to find some novel ideas or insights. Our programme is very research based – in fact, I've already started working on my paper. Now I am working at ISSEK as an intern assisting in developing the big data system of Chinese language. I am highly interested in AI, Big Data, technology and innovation, etc., so I plan to work for a think tank or technology companies/startups after I graduate. I am even dreaming of launching my own project. In our STI programme, you will also learn how to develop your soft skills which will be useful for your future work. I can say that I am really happy with my choice.

Maxim Sinnema, free mover from the Avans University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands

I major in international business at my home university and I attended HSE for Fall semester.

Without any experience in Master programs I attended the courses User Innovation, Corporate Foresight and Strategies in STI Management. My overall picture is very positive. The material used in the lectures is very well structured. I gained knowledge that will be very useful in my future career. This last point is in my eyes the most important.

The User Innovation course was introduced for the first time in September 2018. Attending this course showed me that this course was very interactive and flexible. From my point of view, interaction and flexibility creates an environment where you can learn from the students and lecturers surrounding you. This course provided me with a way of thinking about economic development that I hadn't had before.

In my previous study experience I have never seen a course that covers as much as Strategies in STI Management. This course is in my eyes an introduction to all aspects of business and management. With many different lecturers, the students get the chance to be introduced to multiple disciplines inside businesses. For students that are attending this program mefor one semester, I highly recommend taking Strategies in STI Management in consideration.

Last, the Corporate Foresight course. This course showed me how to use the corporate foresight methodology. This methodology helps businesses to stay ahead of competition by being aware of changes in the (business) environment that could impact your company. The course is very useful because this methodology can be applied for any kind of industry. Besides, there are assignments where you are required to present your idea. Presenting in front of other students makes this course more appealing in my eyes. In addition, fellow students have to ask questions after the presentation. This interaction is beneficial for all students.

Valentin Hippolyte Bereyziat, 1st year student from France

I believe that science, management, industrial and economy classes should be the foundation of my studies if I want to be successful in the future. It is literally what HSE's programme in Governance of Science, Innovation and Technology offers. In addition, HSE provides international perspectives and opportunities to improve my theoretical knowledge and professional experience through an internship and thesis preparation, supported by seminars and team projects.

What's more, HSE offers the opportunity of a Double Degree Programme with one of their partner school around the world, which immediately convinced and attracted me when I was choosing where to do my Master's. I am happy to become part of the  Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) programme this year – at the end of my studies I will receive two diplomas – one from HSE and one from TUB. I strongly believe that the Master's programme will help me to achieve my future goals and career aspirations.
