Samuel Fifty. Jackson as Jules Winnfield, newly enlightened mob hitman
Los Angeles, Summertime 1992
Film:Pulp Fiction
Release Engagement: October 14, 1994
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Costume Designer: Betsy Heimann
Background
Written especially for him, the role of Jules Winnfield catapulted Samuel L. Jackson to enormous (and well-deserved) fame despitePulp Fiction existence his thirtieth film in twenty years of acting. Thanks to both Jackson'due south performance and Tarantino's script, Jules became an immediate sensation with an arsenal of brilliant lines and memorable scenes.
So who is Jules? He could be described as an errand male child for L.A. mobster Marsellus Wallace, but the respect he garners and his talent indicates that he is more of a trusted hitman or, as another of Wallace's go-to men explains, problem-solver.
What'd He Wear?
Jules' look is function of what makes him iconic, a reflection of the Tarantinoian belief that all professional person criminals wear black suits, white shirts, and black ties.
Both being professionals, Jules and beau hitman Vincent each adopt the black arrange uniform for their job at hand – in this instance, retrieving a valuable briefcase from a grouping of petty thieves. Withal, each homo's arrange reflects his own personal style.
Jules' black suit glaze is unmarried-breasted with notch lapels, a welted breast pocket, jetted hip pockets, and four-push cuffs. Two darts run down the front, one through each hip pocket, and a middle seam divides the back in half. Although a timeless wait, Jules' jacket has a few yields to the '90s, including slightly padded shoulders, a ventless back, loose fit, and the low ii-push button stance.
The jacket besides has blackness lining and a small white label nether the correct inner pocket, seen best when Jules prepares to get a county jail-way bathroom.
The double contrary-pleated trousers have side pockets, plain-hemmed bottoms, and center creases down the front and rear. He wears a black leather belt, fastened in the front end through a big rounded steel single-claw buckle
The suit's material appears to be wool, which keeps its status better than the contraction-prone linen suit favored by Vincent. A black wool arrange may seem warm for an L.A. summer, simply as Jules himself muses, "Damn, this morning air is some chilly shit."
Jules' white shirt evokes an earlier era with its button-fastened tab collar. The tab collar also makes Jules' shirt slightly dressier than Vincent'south, which has a more than common spread neckband. Otherwise, the two shirts are the same with white buttons down the front end placket, buttoned butt cuffs, and breast pocket.
Each man also wears a black tie of moderate width. While slimmer than almost, the ties are still wider than those seen in the mid-'60s and today during theMad Men style craze. This works amend for Jules' taller frame than Vincent'southward somewhat squatter ane. However, Vincent isn't supposed to be a fashion plate (he subsequently wears a BOLO TIE) so he probably doesn't care much either.
Jules completes his outfit with a pair of well-polished black leather plain-toe oxfords and black socks.
Advisable to his character, Jules doesn't wearable a picket. If he wants to know what fourth dimension information technology is, he asks someone and they will tell him. Additional accessories include a large twisted gilt pinky band on his right pinky and a big aureate bracelet on his left wrist. He also wears a gold chain around his neck, with a pendant on it. While the pendant has a "J", ostensibly for Jules, we later acquire that there is a possibility that it is a "J" for Jesus.
Finally, 1 of the about distinctive and widely-copied parts of Jules' wardrobe is his wallet. A visitor, BMF Wallets, is selling copies of the distinctive wallet, lovingly embroidered with the immortal "BAD Female parent FUCKER". Jules' particular wallet was brownish with blackness embroidering, but the company has a few varieties to fit your personal taste.
Typically non discussed here, hair is too essential to ignore in Jules' case. Initially envisioned as an afro, Samuel 50. and Quentin instead decided on a jheri curl, long sideburns, and a fu manchu mustache. Y'all know what sort of person can pull this off? An angrily, biblical Samuel L. Jackson.
For the Sake of Completion…
Go Big or Go Home
There is enough that tin can be said about what makes Jules cool. The major matter that sticks out for me is confidence. Non airs or the Godforsaken term swag, merely confidence. Jules enters every room knowing he is the coolest guy there. Someday he walks with someone, he walks ahead of them. He speaks firmly, relatively eloquently, and with enough forceful color that people are going to pay attention. This is outlined from the kickoff equally Vincent tells him about the subtle things that make Europe different from America. Rather than a conversational space-filler ("I know what y'all hateful") or an unsure engagement ("lol tell me about it"), Jules plainly asks: "Example?" in a style that is barely a question. A small moment, but a defining one.
In that location are a few things that Jules and I disagree on, even so, most especially his avoidance of bacon. Filthy animals or not, bacon is at the top of my personal nutrient pyramid.
Jules' car is a green 1974 Chevy Nova two-door coupe.
How to Get the Look
While Tarantino's standard blackness conform look tin can exist dismissed as existence the same all beyond the lath, each arrange inReservoir Dogs andPulp Fiction had subtle differences that showed graphic symbol preferences.
- Black wool full cut suit, consisting of:
- Single-breasted jacket with notch lapels, depression 2-button opinion, welted breast pocket, jetted hip pockets, 4-button cuffs, and ventless backs

The Gun
And Mr. 9mm hither… he'southward the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness.
A lot of idiots get mad about that line. I'grand nigh to tell yous why they're idiots.
Jules' gun, which hecorrectly refers to as "Mr. 9mm", isn't a ".45" just because it looks like the standard M1911 seen in countless video games and World War Two movies. It is, in fact, a nickel-platedStar Model B semi-automatic pistol. The Model B has been used equally a stand up-in for the 1911 in enough of movies, notablyThe Wild Bunch,The Getaway,Dillinger, Three Days of the Condor, andThe Untouchables, only in this case it is exactly what it is supposed to be – a 9mm pistol.
The Star Model B was kickoff manufactured in 1928, just a few years afterwards the M1911 design was updated to the M1911A1. It is externally differentiated from the 1911A1 pattern with an external extractor on the right side and the absenteeism of a grip safety. Information technology carries eight rounds of ix×19 mm Parabellum ammunition and, like the 1911, is single-action.
The Star Model B was made by the Spanish visitor Star Bonifacio Echeverria, Due south.A., a small arms manufacturer that operated in the Basque region throughout the 20th century, from 1905 until defalcation in 1997. Most Star pistols were copies of other designs, including the Model 1908 (a .25 ACP version of the Mannlicher Model 1900), the Ruddy pistol, and – of course – the Star Model B and its compact cousin, the Star Model BM. More recently, Star developed the Firestar, seen in movies and TV such asEstrus andThe Sopranos .
Jules keeps his Star Model B in the forepart of his waistband, tucked off to the left. Vincent indeed carries a .45-caliber 1911A1, fabricated by Car-Ordnance, the aforementioned visitor that manufactured many Thompson submachine guns during the 1920s.

Jules: What country are you from?
Brett: What? What? Wh – ?
Jules: "What" own't no state I've ever heard of. They speak English in What?
Brett: What?
Jules: English language, motherfucker, do y'all speak it?
Brett: Aye! Yes!
Jules: So you know what I'm sayin'!
Brett: Yes!
Jules: Depict what Marsellus Wallace looks like!

Jules: Say 'what' once more. Say 'what' once more, I dare yous, I double dare y'all motherfucker, say what i more Goddamn time!

Jules: Yes yous did. Yep you did! You tried to fuck him. And Marcellus Wallace don't like to be fucked by everyone except Mrs. Wallace. You read the Bible, Brett?
Brett: Yes!
Jules: Well, there's this passage I got memorized, sort of fits the occasion. Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is aggress on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blest is he who, in the proper noun of charity and good volition, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his blood brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I volition strike down upon thee with neat vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you lot will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee.
Footnotes
Any thoughts on what's in the briefcase? Tarantino himself said information technology'due south up to the viewer'south interpretation. The most pop belief seems to be that it's Marsellus Wallace's soul, but – being more of a tangible-minded sort – I like to remember information technology's the diamonds fromReservoir Dogs. We already know that they're set in the aforementioned universe.
